Our Core Beliefs

Houghton Academy is a Christian school.

Making this claim has significant implications for the institution. The fact that we have assembled a faculty and staff who are all Christians does not qualify us to make that claim; Christian education is more than proximity to a Christian teacher. Nor do we claim to be a Christian school because we have many Christian students, which we do.

At Houghton Academy, Christian education means Christian faculty (and staff) implementing a Christian philosophy of education and being Christian role models. A Christian philosophy of education, simply stated, seeks to equip students to understand the world around them through a frame of reference based on the revealed Word of God. We want to equip our students to see the world not through rose-colored glasses, but rather through "Christian" glasses.

Our mission statement and our statement of faith will help identify us within the larger framework of the Judeo-Christian world view.

Head, Heart, Hands

We describe our program as having a three-fold emphasis on head, heart and hands. We seek to supply core knowledge, allow knowledge to be informed by faith, and then encourage students to put their knowledge and faith into action. More
