The Academy facilities include the 2.1 million dollar Thomas and Joan Phillippe Center, which features science and computer labs, expanded classrooms, and the Media Center. The Media Center houses academic volumes and periodicals and provides student access to varied media including computer, video, and audio materials.
The Phillippe academic complex also houses the 300-seat Rosemary Tysinger Auditorium which includes highly sophisticated sound and lighting equipment. Other components of the Phillippe Center include Philinda Bowen Hall, J.W. Tysinger Gymnasium, Cafeteria, music practice rooms, and administrative offices. At nearby Houghton College, students have access to a variety of other academic and recreational facilities.
Boarding and General Facilities
Houghton Academy utilizes four boarding facilities. Fancher Dormitory houses 20 girls, 2 proctors, and a staff family. Students enjoy using the main lounge, kitchen, and on-site laundry facilities. In 2007, the dorm underwent a major addition/renovation with a mind to improving and expanding living spaces.
The boys' dormitory houses 28 students as well as a staff family and two proctors. The building has two large lounges, a recreation area, a storage area, and laundry facilities. The boys dorm also underwent significant remodeling during the summer of 2007.
Merrill House, Blew House, and Montanye House are primarily homes for staff families, but boarding students live there as well. All residential students should plan on living with a roommate.
Students who find it difficult to get home for vacations may sign up in advance for a home stay with day students, faculty/staff, or community members for an additional fee.
For students' medical needs, the nurse's station is located in the Academy academic complex, and a registered nurse is on call 24 hours a day. The school doctor is located five minutes away.
Athletics and Athletic Facilities
All students are encouraged but not required to participate in interscholastic or intramural sports or to join the Academy Ski Club. Located in the snow country of western New York, Academy students are able to take advantage of a long downhill skiing season through the Academy Ski Club. Ski Club goes almost weekly to a nearby ski resort where students enjoy both skiing and snowboarding.
Academy interscholastic sports include boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, co-ed track and field, and co-ed tennis.
On-campus sports facilities include a soccer field and a multi-purpose gym. Academy students also have access to the athletic facilities at nearby Houghton College which include indoor and outdoor tracks, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, racquetball courts, a large gymnasium, fitness center, weight room, climbing wall, an Olympic-size indoor pool, miles of cross-country ski trails, and a ski slope. The college also has a large Equestrian program.
