HOUGHTON ACADEMY PERFORMS “SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER”
TYSINGER AUDITORIUM, HOUGHTON, N.Y. —On February 21-23 at 7:00 pm, the Houghton Academy drama group will presented “She Stoops to Conquer,” one of the funniest plays ever performed. Written by Oliver Goldsmith, and originally set in the restoration period in England, Houghton’s cast and director rewrote it for modern times, cutting out much of the dated language and freshening up the humor with contemporary references.
Emily Gaerte played the lead, Kate Hardcastle, who has to drop a social class or two in order to gain the attention of Charles Marlowe (Sean Douglas), who gets caught in several traps set by prankster Tony Lumpkin (Zach Waasdorp). Socially inept with ladies of class, Marlowe is a cad with “ladies of another class.” Stooping to a level in which she can actually meet the real Marlowe, Kate finds love, and Marlowe eventually finds out his mistake.
Audiences enjoyed the show thoroughly.
Under the direction of Mr. Ben Lingenfelter, high school students perform a drama each spring. The stage in the Rosemary Tysinger auditorium is well-equipped and provides a fine venue in which to perform. Students may participate in the production as actors, stage crew, or in the sound and light booth. The Academy’s light board is is a 48-channel “Idea 48” and the sound board is an Allen and Heath GL3. The ceiling over the stage is 40 feet high and equipment is in place to “fly” sets. One member of the senior drama serves as a student-director for the annual junior high play.
Houghton Academy’s senior high drama group presented its first musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” in March 2007.
Coming up:
