Houghton Academy Adds Sixth Grade
Houghton, NY. Houghton Academy announces the re-opening of sixth grade for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.
"We are excited to offer a complete grade 6-8 middle school program," states John Nelson, Head of School. “The reintroduction of sixth grade is the culmination of innovative curriculum planning that will not only serve current Houghton Academy families who have expressed interest in enrolling their younger children, but also prospective families desiring a quality secondary school experience for their children beginning with grade 6. We're pleased to be expanding for the upcoming school year."
The new integrated arts curriculum features a thematic approach focused on central themes each quarter. These themes will be taught within consistently articulated core values of a Christian worldview, academic excellence, servant hearts, responsibility, accountability, and integrity.
The multi-grade setting provides the following benefits:
- Differentiated instruction based on need, ability, or interest, as opposed to a singular focus on age-grouping.
- Opportunity for students to develop leadership skills working with classmates of various ages and abilities.
- Stimulating and challenging younger students by the role modeling of and interaction with older classmates.
- Increasing social experiences by providing additional opportunities for all to serve, lead follow, collaborate, and foster peer relationships.
School Principal Judith Mollenkof comments, “this multi-grade, integrated curriculum provides a challenging learning experience and fits well with the Academy’s current middle school program and staffing.”
