Houghton Academy

Ways to Give

Your gift to Houghton Academy provides our faculty with the tools to give each student a distinctively Christ-centered college-preparatory education.

We hope you’ll seek wisdom from God as you decide how much to give and to whom. If you choose Houghton Academy, consider the following opportunities:

Annual Fund

One of the great traditions of private education in America is alumni support of their alma mater’s Annual Fund. The greatest schools have prospered and grown, in a large part, due to the strong financial support of their alumni.

Together with tuition income, the Annual Fund is one of the two major sources of revenue for Houghton Academy. Gifts to the Annual Fund help cover the costs of tuition assistance scholarships, faculty salaries and continued education, library and laboratory acquisitions, athletic and music equipment, administrative support, and other services. As the foundation upon which the Academy builds its entire program, the Annual Fund provides a meaningful way for alumni to participate in the Academy’s ongoing educational mission.

We hope you will join other alumni in making a yearly Annual Fund donation. Certainly it is understood that many new graduates are burdened with college expenses and other encumbrances of young adulthood—so any size gift is appreciated. Indeed, it isn’t the size of your gift that is important, but that you do participate at some level.

Capital Fund

Periodically the Headmaster and Board of Trustees initiate building projects or programs that require large amounts of money to carry out. Major gifts to these projects may be pledged over a number of years. In recent years, capital fund projects have included the construction of the Thomas Phillippe Center and the installation of a new computer lab.

Endowment

Houghton Academy’s endowment is small but growing. As it increases, investment income will be used to support scholarships, salaries, and special projects designed to perpetuate the core purposes of the school.

Traditionally planned gifts make up a substantial portion of a private school’s endowment—and for good reason. Bequests quite naturally result from one’s vision of the meaningful work and long-term influence one wishes to see continued after death, and a school’s endowment is designed to help ensure just such a vision.

For each of us it is never too early—or too prudent—to make our will, choosing today what we would leave as our legacy to the future.

Ways to Give

Cash

The most common and easiest way to support Houghton Academy is by giving cash.

Matching Gifts

Many employers will match a donor’s charitable gifts. If your company or firm has a matching gifts program, simply enclose the form along with your check.

Stock

Stocks or other investments that have grown in value can become a substantial gift made at low net cost to the donor.

Real Estate

Many donors find considerable tax advantages in giving houses, land, farms, or commercial properties.

Gifts in Kind

Houghton Academy welcomes the donation of many items of value. We now need band instruments, library books, etc. Gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or record of purchase.

Bequests

Including Houghton Academy in your will through a bequest is an effective way to make a gift which might not be possible during your lifetime. By designating the Academy as the beneficiary of a specific portion of your estate, you play a vital role in the school’s future.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts

Many donors prefer to make a gift in someone else’s name. Donations may be made in memory of a deceased loved one or specified to honor a family member or member of the Academy faculty or administration.
