If you hold securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.) which would result in a long-term capital gain if sold, you can make an outright gift to Houghton Academy and realize substantial savings on capital gains taxes. Thus, the actual cost to you as a donor is often far less than the value of your gift to the school. It is recommended that you consult with your tax advisor to discuss the latest IRS rules and regulations regarding gifts of securities.
It is very important to inform the school if you are making a gift of securities. Contact the Advancement Office by email or by phone at (585) 567-8115. This way we can expedite an acknowledgement and gift receipt for your donation.
Ways to Donate Securities
There are two ways to make a donation of securities: 1) by electronic transfer authorization through your broker or bank, or 2) the physical delivery of certificates to the Academy.
Electronic Transfer Authorization
Your broker can electronically transfer your securities to Houghton Academy. Please contact the Advancement Office by email or by phone at (585) 567-8115 for electronic transfer instructions.
If you have physical securities, you may deliver them in person or by registered mail to the Houghton Academy Advancement office. If the securities are registered in your name, you will need to provide an Irrevocable Stock/Bond Power Form to send along with the certificates. If you need a Irrevocable Stock/Bond Power Form please contact the Advancement Office by email or by phone at (585) 567-8115 and we will email the form to you. Fill out the form and mail or deliver the form with the certificate(s) to:

PLANNING TIP: Don’t sell appreciated stock yourself! Even though you give the proceeds as a gift, the IRS will impose capital gains tax on your sale, wiping out its benefits.
