On Saturday, June 10th, Houghton Academy conducted its 129th Commencement Exercises in the Rosemary Tysinger Auditorium, celebrating the graduation of 24 members of the Class of 2017. Family, friends, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and community members celebrated with the graduates.
The ceremony included speeches from class Valedictorian, Alice Liu, and class Salutatorian, Joel Teears. Liu spoke to her classmates about overcoming challenges. In her words: “Fellow classmates, I want to tell you that high school graduation is just the start. We still have the long road of life. We still have a lot of difficulties to deal with, a lot of challenges to overcome, a lot of hardships to go through. But don’t fear, don’t panic. Do what you should do and always try your best.”
Faculty member and Academic Support Coordinator, Caroline Tranchell, delivered the formal commencement address to the graduates and attendees.
Tranchell imparted to the graduates: “Thanks to the years of mentors and teachers at home and here at Houghton Academy, your God given talents, and the grace that God so freely offers, you are leaving today with the tools for success. You are an empowered person, here and now. And in turn, you have the great responsibility to empower those in need.”
Tranchell concluded her address by encouraging the Class of 2017 to “Be Young. Be Bold. Be Empowered.”
